The Adventures of Chester Book Club
How many of you readers out there would be interested in participating in a book club? The parameters are:
-would read 1 to 2 books a month
-I would post twice a week or so on each book. Participants would be free to post their own thoughts in the comments to that post.
The first book I'm considering is Sir Robert Thompson's "Defeating Communist Insurgency". If you think you might like to participate, shoot me an email or post a comment here.
I'm just taking a pulse at the moment. Don't go buy the book yet! I'm working on a deal with the publisher. No promises.

Count me in, too.

I definitely would. I would also suggest setting up some sort of message board or forumn for it.

I'd love to participate. I could read without feeling guilty..."oh, I'm not wasting time. I'm doing this for Chester's blog."
I'd liek to suggest Doris Kearns Goodwin's "Team of Rivals" but only if people can get it at the library...which I did this afternoon. The list price on the inside cover is $35.00. However, most libraries have it.
I'll post a notice on Gates about your idea.

I'd be interested, haven't read anything good for quite awhile now.

I'd like too, but I'm too poor to spend money on books, Gotta buy for Sweet Sarah, you know.
So I get my books from the library and they are a bunch of liberal assholes, so they don't have many books that I read. So..I have to get them on InterLibrary Loan, and it takes about a month to get one in. I think they delay the process on purpose.
Besides, If I have to read for a deadline, my web surfing will go all to hell.

Hi There,
Found you through G.O.V..
If I wasn't taking 15 units this semester, I'd be all over this. I crammed four books over my last break.
"1000 years for Revenge" by Peter Lance.
"Terrorist Hunter" by Anonymous.
"American Jihad" by Steven Emmerson.
and a design book-
One thought: Amazon usually has used copies of the book I am looking for, for real cheap! I picked up the Peter Lance book for $4 and the Terrorist Hunter one for $2!
Try it.

I have the same problem as Papa Ray. Since my two kids were born (and number three is on the way) I've found out my money DOES talk, but all it says is "Goodbye". So going to the library is the rule now and just like Papa, I always find myself using the interlibrary loan system. Funny, even here in Texas good conservative reading is scarce. Anyone have a solution? Perhaps there's a conservative group that cycles their books around each other and periodically chips in for new ones?
Yeah, I know that's what our library system is supposed to do. Spare me!

Terrific idea. There is some great stuff out there by the likes of Victor Davis Hanson, John Lewis Gaddis, Fouad Ajami, Orianna Fallaci, Melanie Phillips, Bernard Lewis, Ralph Peters, etc.

Good idea. In some cases, Oriana Fallaci's interviews, just two of them a month would keep us busy. Like Papa Ray, I have to be a bit frugal but it is all possible. And don't want to cut down on my web surfing.
American Jihad was great. I guess you probably want to read the non-fiction books but sometime a work of fiction can be very timely too. And maybe give us a change from the cold, hard truth. Although, some of what I read in the newspapers, I would have see only as fiction 15 years ago, pre-Clinton.
Yep, sign me up.

I would be game. The book has to be in print or have lots of used copies available on Amazon) and not super expensive (Defeating Communist Insurgency is out of print).

I'd like to do this too! I've got a ton of books to read, but am always looking for one or two dozen more to add to the stacks. One trick I've been trying has been to locate the library book on tape copy, or better, book on CD. Then I rip and listen on my commute.
I'd also like to be able to propose titles with my reason(s) for recommending them. Of course, I'd like to hear about others and why people want to propose them.
Thanks to Gates of Vienna for the pointer.

Thanks for the big response! more news soon . . .

I like the idea. As others have said, that particular book is out of print and sort of expensive ($30 to $150 depending on where you order it) so some thought should be given to books that are more accessible (cheap!).

Chester, your recommendation of Alan Furst's works has brought me great pleasure. I have purchased all of his pre-WW11 books and have read 5 of them. What a treasure. Thanks for passing along this national resource.

PS: I in for the book club.
